Patented Odor-Absorbing Hydrocolloid Technology in Exuderm® Odorshield™ Wins Medical Design Excellence Award 2007

Medline exclusively markets Exuderm Odorshield in the United States

Monday, August 13, 2007

Mundelein, IL – The odor-absorbing hydrocolloid technology in Exuderm® Odorshield™ was awarded the notable Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA) 2007 in the category "General Hospital Devices and Therapeutic Products." The patented, advanced hydrocolloid with odor control, developed and manufactured by Avery Dennison Medical™, is exclusively marketed in the United States by Medline Industries, Inc., the nation's largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies.

The MDEA is the premier worldwide competition for the medical technology community. The program recognizes the achievements of medical device companies responsible for creating innovative products that improve healthcare delivery, increase effectiveness of existing medical practices and ultimately provide enhanced benefits to the patient. Entries are evaluated by an impartial, multidisciplinary panel of experienced jurors on the basis of their innovative design and engineering features.

Exuderm Odorshield is an odor-absorbing hydrocolloid dressing with a unique characteristic: Unlike any other hydrocolloid on the market, it is designed to absorb odors from matter that is exuded from the wound. This innovative hydrocolloid dressing presents a major improvement over the traditional charcoal-based, odor-absorbing dressings, which don't work well on exudative wounds.

Wound malodors are commonly associated with chronic and infected wounds and often affect patients socially and psychologically. Exuderm Odorshield is recommended for use on pressure ulcers, partial and full thickness wounds, leg ulcers, donor sites, wounds with light-to-moderate drainage, lacerations and abrasions, and first and second-degree burns.

Features of Exuderm OdorShield:

  • Cyclodextrin "buckets" trap odor-causing molecules
Exuderm OdorShield contains cyclodextrins — naturally occuring, non-cytotoxic molecules that help absorb odor. Cyclodextrins are bucket-shaped molecules that attract and trap odor-causing molecules in the dressing.
  • Highly absorbent
Exuderm OdorShield absorbs as well or better than any other hydrocolloid on the market.
  • Easy wound visualization
Translucent appearance allows visualization of wound without removing dressing.
  • Longer wear time
The smooth satin backing, tapered edge, and low-residue formula help ensure longer wear.

"At Avery Dennison Medical, developing medical technologies and designing new products that improve patient care comes naturally: it's what we do. Nevertheless, it is most rewarding when your efforts and commitment are being recognized by a board of independent MDEA jurors. This recognition keeps our team focused on its primary goal to service the medical device industry to the benefit of the patients," said Colleen Ward, business director of Avery Dennison Medical.

The 2007 Medical Design Excellence Award winners were honored at a ceremony during the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Conference and Exposition, June 12-14, 2007, at New York City's Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
