Green Technology Improves Energy-Efficiency at Medline's Dubuque Facility

New customer service center earns energy efficiency rebates from Alliant Energy

Friday, September 11, 2009

Proving that green business practices are not only good for the environment but for the bottom line as well, Interstate Power & Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, announced that  Medline Industries, Inc. has earned  more than $113,400 in rebates for their proactive efforts in reducing energy usage at their Dubuque, Iowa facility.  Medline qualified for the rebates as part of an Alliant's energy incentive program.

The new Dubuque facility, which houses the company's customer service center, features energy efficient lighting, building insulation and a geothermal heating system. The installation of these and other green technologies resulted in an electrical use reduction of 320,565 kWh, which avoids more than 230 metric tons of carbon dioxide. This is equivalent to removing the CO2 emissions from 26,131 gallons of gasoline consumed or 535 barrels of oil consumed.

"We challenged our building design, construction and operations teams to achieve real energy efficiency with this new facility," said Jim Abrams, chief operating officer of Medline. "Results such as these exemplify that the focus and attention we are devoting to greening our products, our processes and our facilities is making a difference."

Medline, the nation's largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of healthcare products, manufactures and distributes more than 100,000 products to hospitals, extended care facilities, surgery centers, home care dealers and agencies and other markets.  The cutting-edge, environmentally-friendly Dubuque building is currently undergoing The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification review for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

In addition to geothermal heating, solar-tracking skylights and tankless hot water heaters, the building features a daylight harvesting system, which uses natural sunlight to supplement electric lighting. Digital photo sensors detect daylight levels and automatically adjust the output of electric lighting to create a balance. Studies show this system generates up to 84% savings in both energy consumption and lighting costs.

"It was a pleasure working with Medline on this project," said Craig Clefisch-Strategic Account Manager, Alliant Energy. "I applaud the company for everything it has done to be green and have enjoyed working with the leadership on energy-efficiency improvement projects."
